The 10 ‘Surprising’ Cities for Foodies


New York and San Francisco have long reigned supreme over the food world, but other cities may be catching up, notes a new analysis by®. The site scoured the data to find out where the best up-and-coming areas for foodies are – you know, in case you have any home buyers who shop via their stomach.®’s research team took into account a growing number of highly rated restaurants, craft breweries, and specialty food markets, fresh bakeries, as well as the percentage of adults who dine out at least three times a month. The team also excluded the 50 largest cities in the country and ranked the remaining top 450 using some of the above criteria.

“It’s so easy to go to New York and Los Angeles to find good restaurants. For everyone else looking for something specific, something regional, something surprising, they have to go out to smaller parts of America,” says Matt Gross, editor in chief at Panna, a video cooking site, and former editor of “With attention paid to great food all over the U.S., these ‘surprising’ cities shouldn’t be so much of a surprise.”

The 10 next big food towns, according to®, are:

  2. Charleston, S.C.
  3. Berkeley, Calif.
  4. Richmond, Va.
  5. Orlando, Fla.
  6. Salt Lake City, Utah
  7. Honolulu, Hawaii
  8. Bend, Ore.
  9. Pittsburgh, Pa.
  10. Cincinnati, Ohio
